How to nominate yourself?
Translated works are submitted to the International Muhammad Rizo Ogakhi Prize Competition by the translator himself or by literary and scientific organizations and publishing houses. To do this, you must upload an online application via a special link on the award website, as well as a resume, a copy of your passport, a scanned copy of the cover, title page and last page of the book submitted to the competition, and an electronic version of the work in PDF format, or send the specified documents electronically to conferenceuzlit@gmail.com. Documents can also be sent by mail along with the original translated work (the book or magazine in which the work is published) to the following address: Writers' Union of Uzbekistan, 100066, Tashkent, Chilanzar district, Bunyodkor street, Adiblar hiyoboni, with the note "For the competition of the Muhammad Rizo Ogakhi Prize". It should be noted that the competition accepts translated works published in book form or in printed periodicals and electronic literary journals and almanacs within five years from the date of the announcement. This means that works published between 2020 and May 30, 2025 are eligible to participate in this competition.
What are the competition areas?
The international competition is held in the following nominations: – the best translation of prose phenomena of Uzbek literature into foreign languages; – the best translation of poetic manifestations of Uzbek literature into foreign languages; – the best translation of Uzbek children's literature into foreign languages; - the best translation of prose works by foreign writers into Uzbek; - the best translation of poetry in foreign languages into Uzbek; - the best translation into Uzbek of children's literature created in foreign languages. Translations of stage works will be considered based on the rules specified in this paragraph.
Is the competition held annually?
The Muhammad Rizo Ogakhi International Prize competition is held every two years.
Are translations made in a third language accepted?
In keeping with contemporary traditions of literary translation, the Muhammad Rizo Ogakhi International Translation Award competition is focused on translations made directly from the original language. Translations made through a third language are also accepted (especially if the work is written in a language that is not widely spoken in the world and is translated from a language recognized as international).
Special features of participation of foreign translators
Particular attention is paid to the fact that the works of Uzbek authors are translated by foreign translators from the original language. The expenses associated with the participation of foreign laureates of the international award, who arrived at the gala event to receive the award, are paid by the organizers. Prizes to winners are paid in national currency. Foreign winners of the international competition may be paid prize money in foreign currency in an amount equivalent to the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.
What are the selection criteria?
Translations for the international competition will be accepted based on the following criteria: - translations into foreign languages of works by Uzbek authors that reflect at a high artistic level the ancient history, values and traditions, unique way of life and noble deeds of the Uzbek people and have taken a worthy place in the history of national literature; - translations into Uzbek of highly artistic works by foreign authors that extol universal values and ideas; - translations done with high skill, fully preserving the content and style of the work, its artistic uniqueness; - high-quality translations of works that have received special recognition in the national and world literary environment.
Are there any age restrictions?
There is no age limit for participation in the competition. However, it should be noted that the Muhammad Rizo Ogakhi International Prize Competition is intended for professional translators whose works have been published in literary publications.
Requirements for works
The minimum amount of work accepted for the international competition: Best translation of a prose work of Uzbek literature into a foreign language – minimum of 10 printed sheets; Best translation of a poetic work of Uzbek literature into a foreign language – minimum of 5 printed sheets; Best translation of samples of Uzbek children's literature into a foreign language – minimum of 5 printed sheets; Best translation of a prose work originally written in a foreign language into Uzbek – minimum of 10 printed sheets; Best translation of a poetic work originally written in a foreign language into Uzbek – minimum of 5 printed sheets; Best translation of samples of children's literature originally written in a foreign language into Uzbek – minimum of 5 printed sheets. It should be noted that translating a major work by one author (a novel, a series of stories, a poetry cycle, a poem, a novel in verse, or a dramatic work in verse or prose) will increase the candidate's chances of becoming a winner.
Are retranslated works accepted?
A work that has previously been translated and published in Uzbek and then re-translated by another author will not be accepted for consideration in the competition. Translations that have previously been published and then republished (even if they are republished with new poems or stories), as well as translations that have previously participated in other competitions, will also not be accepted. It should be noted that the international prize cannot be awarded to the same person twice, and one translator cannot participate in two or more nominations. If the work is translated by co-authors, the number of translators cannot exceed two.
Are there any restrictions on the submission of documents?
Restrictions on submitting an application for the international prize competition exist only within the established norms. That is, the volume of the submitted work should not be less than the specified norm, the works should not be submitted later than the specified deadline, and should not exceed the requirements imposed on the works.
